Helping strangers

2 Jul

There are many ways you could make life better for others even for a moment. You could offer your seat to an old lady in the bus or give directions to a tourist on the street. But where do you draw the line?

It’s fine when someone asks for directions or help to move something. But if a stranger asks for cash, the answer is no. It might be mean but the real world isn’t exactly that nice either.

If it’s an emergency where he needed to get something, I’ll rather buy the item than giving cash directly to him. But either way it’s a tough call and I don’t the right answer.

Sometimes your decision to help a stranger can be a matter of life and death, yet more often than not, they are probably just preying on your altruism. Under what circumstances are you willing to help a stranger?

Depends on situation, like donating is fine but begging unless you have working hand and legs, don’t beg.

@bev, @massy: I’m not talking about donation. I’m talking about those strangers that approach you on the street asking for money. Also it’s hard to know if the donation is real.

Honestly? The real me would donate so long as I have something to spare. I don’t think much about whether it is right or wrong unless you truly know the motive of the person you are donating to. All I know is you can’t go wrong with donating. An act of kindness/compassion never is.

@dinoza: Again this isn’t donation. Its some random guy asking you for money to get petrol/taxi ride etc.

Whoops! You’re right. My bad. Replace donate with help. My answer remains the same.

I saw a derelict yesterday sitting down at a pavement eating prawn crackers at a time when we are supposed to have dinner.

I felt like giving him some money but I was hesitant and in the end I did not.

Reading this gives me an idea that if next time around I feel like helping a homeless or derelict, I’ll bring him/her to a Mamak shop and treat them to a plate of meal.

But I wont be giving my seat in a bus when the person standing is a young healthy girl :-)
